New Honda Solar Hydrogen Station for Home Use

Early this year Honda launches its next generation Honda Solar Hydrogen Station, with an intention to design a system that fits into a house garage, produces 0.5 kg. of hydrogen over an 8-hour overnight fill suitable for commuting average of 10,000 miles per year on a fuel cell car.

Honda claimed that a differential pressure electrolyser facilitated the elimination of the need for a separate compressor which is the most expensive component of their previous system. The innovation enables them to reduce the size of other components in the system and an increased efficiency by more than 25 percent.

On new hydrogen storage system development, McPhy Energy, with French Laboratory CEA Liten is set to test a new solid-state hydrogen storage tank which McPhy claims could store hydrogen at low pressure in a short period of time. And that it can be well connected to a solar or wind powered fueling system.

In another news story, hydrogen car builders, Honda, Toyota Motor Corp., Daimler AG and Hyundai Motor Co. announces readiness for hydrogen fuel cell cars by 2015.

Honda also mentioned that their solar hydrogen station is designed to compliment a public network of fast fill hydrogen stations, like their fast fill capable Honda FCX Clarity. The new station was installed in the center of Los Angeles, employs the same 48-panel 6.0KW solar array that used to power their previous system. The fueling system utilizes thin film solar cells composed of copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS) produced by Honda Soltec, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honda that markets solar cells.

Included in Honda's strategy in building home-based solar hydrogen station was to address the need for such infrastructure that supports fuel cell usage.
